Rinck, Dr Margaret J
Books > Self Help > Relationships
Like Jan Silvious's Please Don't Say You Need Me ( LJ 9/1/89), this is a book for codependents. But the two books are quite different. Rinck gives a fuller overview of the professional literature and organizes her guidance more in terms of dynamics (e.g., the roots of codependency). Also, while explicitly Christian, her narrative is suited to a more pluralistic readership, with a fine critique of the ways that biblical teachings can be subtly distorted to encourage excessive submission. Interested readers should also investigate Robert Hemfelt et al.'s excellent Love Is a Choice , an October title from Thomas Nelson.

Davitz,Lois & Joel R.
Books > Self Help > Relationships
This book is a lively, informal presentation of how to make a marriage not just long lasting, but, dare we say it, fun. The authors come with credentials of sixty-years of happy marriage plus over forty years of family research (parents, teenagers, and marriage) in the US and abroad. Lois and Joel Davitz build this book around seven discoveries they have uncovered in their marriage career. They strip away all the fancy jargon and focus on what is really important and what can make a difference in a successful marriage. Elaborating on each discovery with personal anecdotes and playful dialogue, the book uncovers crucial relationship truths which layer and deepen with each discovery. The seven ways include: sharing doses of fun and pleasure, learning to value differences, being considerate and thoughtful, as well as learning to let go of grudge-holding.

Scott Stanley offers a five-step plan--based on his groundbreaking marital research and uniquely spiritual approach--for understanding commitment, including learning to handle the pressures of everyday life, moving through the pain of unfulfilled dreams and hopes, overcoming attraction to others that might endanger a marriage, transforming your thinking from "me versus you" to "we" and "us," and capturing the beauty and mystery of lifelong devotion, loyalty, teamwork, and building a lasting vision for the future.
