McBride, Denis Cssr
Books > Spirituality > Spiritual Direction
In this second volume of Reflecting with Paintings, Denis McBride takes us on another fascinating and challenging journey of imagination. Focusing on ten paintings by artists from a range of times and cultures. We explore the thoughts and feelings of a wide variety of characters, from Joseph the husband of Mary to a lone woman in a New York cafe. As we do so, we are invited to inhabit for a while another world – to look at things through different eyes and to listen to different voices. If we take this step out of our own familiar everyday world, we may be enabled to begin to see things differently in our own lives.

Books > Spirituality > Spiritual Direction
Taking ten paintings, Denis McBride 'becomes' a person featured in it, and provides a monologue which, as he says, is best spoken aloud rather than just read. Among them, we meet Giorgio Barbarelli (the painter, Giorgione), Mary with Jesus after He has been taken down from the Cross, Peter being forgiven by Jesus, Monsignor Portobello, Jojo, and, earlier, his Irish Gran.
McBride's reflections are very much in character; nothing is forced or artificial. Each is between ten to fourteen pages long, so there is time to develop the humour, honesty and the sense of hope in each chapter. He writes in prose, but it is laid out attractively on the pages, phrase by phrase. There is encouragement not to rush, to stop and to re-speak the words or a word. There is an implicit invitation to speak with the person. Very enjoyable - characters to get to know and to savour.

Going a day retreat or quiet day is a regular activity for many local churches. During the preparatory seasons of Advent and Lent, they are especially popular. While many retreat houses and religious communities offer a programme for such days, many groups prefer a do-it yourself approach. This resource contains twelve complete day-long programmes that are, focused around different themes, appropriate for use at varying times of the Christian year, suitable for all ages, and assorted pastoral contexts. It also gives step-by-step instructions on creating your own programme from scratch.

Poust, Mary DeTurris
Books > Spirituality > Spiritual Direction
Author, journalist, and speaker Mary DeTurris Poust examines rich and nurturing examples of spiritual friendship from well-known saints, writers, and modern religious leaders who serve as exemplars for cultivating meaningful relationships in a world of Twitter and Facebook. Addressing a growing modern hunger for deep soul friendships, popular "New York Catholic" columnist and "Our Sunday Visitor" blogger Mary DeTurris Poust looks honestly but hopefully at today's culture, where people feel increasingly isolated despite the advent of myriad gadgets designed to keep them "connected." Reflection and discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this a useful resource for small groups, moms groups, and for spiritual direction.
